Diego Simeone's side had gone into the final day of the La Liga season two points ahead of city rivals Real Madrid, and they secured the title with a 2-1 victory at Valladolid. Real came from behind to beat Villarreal 2-1, with the visitors warming up for Wednesday's Europa League final against Manchester United with an impressive performance. With fortune smiling in Atletico, Suarez - who joined the club last summer after being jettisoned by Barcelona - raced clear following a dreadful back pass to fire home and put his side in front. The league title success is Simeone's second as Atletico boss, while he also won the league as a player with the club in 1996.
