MMDA: Economic losses from traffic woes risingBy NEIL JAYSON SERVALLOShome/News/Top Stories/MMDA: Economic losses from traffic woes risingThe Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said economic losses due to chronic traffic gridlocks in Metro Manila might shoot up to P5.4 billion daily in 2035 if no interventions were made. Citing a study conducted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), with which the MMDA partnered last year, MMDA Command Center chief Edison “Bong” Nebrija said the gradual growth of economic losses was alarming. It’s regrettable that the losses are growing just because of traffic,” he said. JICA said the economic cost of transportation in Metro Manila had risen to P3.5 billion a day in 2018. The Japanese agency assessed losses by studying the economic cost of transportation, referring to vehicle operating cost and time cost spent by drivers and passengers in Metro Manila.
