Maine employees may finally bypass forced arbitration under proposed bill

Maine lawmakers are working on a bill that would help employees get around forced arbitration clauses that prevent workers from taking their employers to court for alleged violations of Maine’s employment laws. LD 1693 would “protect the rights and voices of Maine workers,” Senate President Troy Jackson, who proposed the bill, recently told the Press Herald. In Maine alone, there are at least 250 employers that prohibit employees from filing public claims against them, Young told the Press Herald. Under the new bill, employees would be able to take their employers to public court because state authorities would oversee the case. The state would use the money to “hire more investigators to insure compliance with the law,” Young said in his public testimony.
