Major U.S. companies are lobbying in a scrum for early vaccine

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention vaccine advisory group will vote Sunday on how to prioritize the next groups in line to get the vaccine: essential workers or the broader elderly population outside long-term care. The government estimates a pool of essential workers of about 87 million spanning dozens of industries, including many people of color and many earning low wages. Local officials in each state will have to make tough choices about which essential workers get their shots first. Once the vaccine does begin to flow to essential workers, states will be working from the government’s master list of industry categories. Some advocates and policy experts fear the competition for vaccines will favor the wealthiest companies with the strongest lobbying teams in state capitals.
