Manchester United have not been afraid to spend big in wide areas, but their inability to target wingers that can contribute to the same level as their rivals may hold Erik ten Hag’s side back as they look to improve on last season. After a third-placed Premier League finish and Carabao Cup victory, the Red Devils will be hoping to next challenge the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal at the top of the table. Arsenal came closest to toppling City last season with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli moving to a new level and becoming the Gunners’ talisman. However, United have been unable to recruit players in the same vein, having spent £158million on Jadon Sancho and Antony in recent years. Though the Brazilian showed flashes of promise in his first season at Old Trafford, he scores just one Premier League goal after his opening three games at the club and Ten Hag will be demanding more final product from his game.
