Lingard’s future at Old Trafford was unclear this time last year as he struggled for game-time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer before joining Premier League rivals West Ham on loan. Manchester United must not decide whether to cash in on Lingard or reintegrate him into the first-team squad, and Rooney believes it will be the latter. ‘Jesse is a fantastic player,’ Derby County boss and Red Devils legend Rooney said after the pre-season friendly against Man United on Sunday. ‘He went through a difficult period but he got through it and his way of getting through it was going out on loan, getting back playing football.
