Man fleeing elephants is killed by crocodile

A fisherman was killed by a crocodile after fleeing a herd of elephants in eastern Zambia. Dean Nyirenda, 52, had been returning from a fishing trip with two friends on Wednesday when they unexpectedly came across the elephants. The trio ran for safety, with Nyirenda diving into a stream near the Luangwa River in a desperate attempt to escape the animals. Figures from Resource Africa show that of the 26 wildlife-related deaths recorded in 2023, 15 were caused by crocodile attacks, most of them along the Luangwa River. It comes after a British student left with her 'foot dangling loose' after being savaged by a 10ft crocodile in Zambia in 2021.
