United have long tracked Varane, with Ed Woodward privately briefing in years gone by that the club would be willing to break their transfer record to sign the defender. However, Varane’s contract situation means that will not be necessary, though Madrid are seeking around £50m for the defender. Varane has reportedly agreed a salary with United and will become one of the club’s best paid players behind David De Gea and Paul Pogba.
