Mandera mum, child deaths down by 70%


Maternal deaths in Mandera county have declined by more than 70 per cent in three years. Health executive Mohamed Sheikh yesterday said the deaths declined from 3,795 per 100,000 births in 2013, to 1,000 per 100,000 this year. Sheikh said the county has 833 skilled medical personnel, up from 154 skilled and non-skilled healthcare providers three years ago. Sheikh said the county has hired more health workers, acquired ambulances, refurbished and equipped health facilities and established 18 maternity centres. “In the first six months of this year, we had 4,732 births in our facilities, including 78 done through caesarean section.
