ASSOCIATED PRESSManny Machado made what many concluded was a play for the ages on Friday night when his San Diego Padres defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Much like this year with Machado, Nettles was acquired in a late spring deal from the Yankees. The 1984 Padres opened 10-2 on their way to 11-5, 92 victories and a division win by 12 games. The next nine years are at $32 million a season as the club’s revenues are expected to increase. One thing is for sure, Nettles, even at 39 upon his San Diego arrival, and Caminiti could both pick it and had strong arms.
