Earlier in the morning, stocks were slightly higher at 23,464.18, up by 79.52 points, or 0.34 percent. The Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index closed lower at 2,836.80, down by 0.34 percent. The Shenzhen Stock Exchange Composite Index lost 0.86 percent at 1,774.22. In Tokyo, stocks closed higher. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 14.74 points, or 0.96 percent, to finish at 1,549.47.
