Marking out the middlemen: New laws to be tabled, says Zahid

BAGAN DATUK: The Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry, together with the Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry had been instructed to discuss and table new laws to control unscrupulous middlemen, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. "While existing laws including the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 were sufficient, they did not cover prices set by middlemen or cartel. "I have instructed these two ministries to discuss a new law that will be able monitor prices set by middlemen who have been manipulating the market's supply-and-demand factor. This will allow us to curb profiteering by middlemen. "The interest of the people must be given utmost priority as the increasing prices of items (which led to) high cost of living is a common issue among Malaysians," he said while giving stern warning to unscrupulous middlemen.
