Marni Soupcoff: Quebec's niqab ban is probably unlawful and certainly nonsensical

This is Quebec, the province that in 2013 proposed a “charter of values” that would have banned public servants from wearing overt religious symbols. We worry that some Muslim women are dominated by their husbands and fathers and kept secluded from the rest of society. Do they have to try to determine if the woman is exempt from the law for serious religious reasons (which is a possibility contemplated by the legislation, but not worked out in any way)? Is anyone concerned about the optics of Muslim women (and Muslim women only) frequently getting booted off public transit? In the mean time, at least we can all be relieved that Quebec has now, at last, become religiously neutral.
