In contrast, mass fatalities in Australia were on the rise, with most related to bushfires and floods. Most mass fatalities were caused by transportation (64 per cent), with accidents involving ships, planes and trains. Four coal mining disasters caused 9 per cent of mass fatalities, with war-related events counting for another 9 per cent.
