Massachusetts and Maryland lead on key measure of Advanced Placement access

Maryland ranked second in the country, with 31.2 percent of its class of 2017 passing at least one AP test. Nationally, the College Board said, more than 711,000 public high school graduates passed at least one AP test. For a sizable share of high school students, it is also a routine expectation on the road to a diploma. The volume of AP testing in calculus last year — nearly 450,000 — was more than four times the level found in computer science. So far, according to the Computer Science Teachers Association, no states require students to take a class in computer science before graduation — although Virginia recently added computer science to a list of topics that schools must teach.
