Mayo 'working with HSE on a number of Covid-19 related queries' ahead of Connacht semi-final with Leitrim

JAMES HORAN’S Mayo senior footballers have become the latest inter-county squad to become embroiled in Covid-19 issues – just two days out from their Connacht SFC semi-final against Leitrim. A statement issued by the county board this morning revealed: “Mayo GAA are currently working with the HSE on a number of Covid-19 related queries amongst members of the county senior football panel. There has been no confirmation, at time of going to press, as to whether any Mayo panellists have returned positive tests for the coronavirus; how many (if any) are currently isolating; or even how many players could potentially be deemed close contacts. When contacted by Independent.ie, a Mayo GAA spokesperson said: “As far as we are concerned, the game is still taking place.”The Connacht Council declined to comment, but the hope is that the number of Mayo players potentially impacted can be contained and that the reigning Connacht champions – who are 1/500 favourites against Leitrim – have a sufficiently deep panel to absorb this badly-timed setback. The winners in Castlebar are due to face Galway in the Connacht final on July 25.
