McCluskey, Corbyn’s biggest backer, predicted a series of reforms aimed at empowering grassroots members and shifting the balance of power decisively to the left through the conference. Wednesday The conference ends with a lunchtime speech from Corbyn, who arrives in Brighton bolstered by the election result. In an hour-long interview with the Guardian, McCluskey said he did not think there was now any “serious opposition” in the parliamentary Labour party to Corbyn. He defended the involvement of the unions, saying they had been integral to the Labour party since its formation. McCluskey reiterated his belief that it would be right for the next leader of the Labour party to be a woman, mentioning Emily Thornberry, Rebecca Long-Bailey and Angela Rayner.
