McConnell also was critical of Trump's decision to call Russian President Vladimir Putin to congratulate him on his recent election victory. "I agree with the President's lawyers that Bob Mueller ought to be allowed to finish his job. I think he was an excellent appointment," McConnell told reporters at his weekly news conference in the Capitol. Asked if legislation should be passed to protect Mueller, whom Trump has repeatedly blasted on Twitter, the Kentucky Republican said, "I don't think that's necessary. I think there is widespread feeling, and the President's lawyers obviously agree, that he ought to be allowed to finish the job."
