Measuring true gains: Malaysia’s domestic value added in export

Beyond simply exporting goods, Malaysia plays a “mid-stream” role: domestic production contributes to final products abroad, while local manufacturing relies on imported inputs. A critical measure of domestic benefit is domestic value added — the portion of exports actually produced in Malaysia. Between 2010 and 2022, Malaysia increased domestic value added intensity, signalling a shift towards more complex, higher-value production. In some markets, Malaysia has increased the domestic value added in its exports faster than the overall export volume. For example, in Mexico, exports grew only modestly, but higher domestic value added shows that Malaysian firms are producing more locally and keeping more value at home.
