Staff at 12 meat plants run by Silver Fern Farms worked on Good Friday and Easter Monday to try to catch up with a serious backlog of animals needing to be processed. To solve this problem, farmers sent their stock to the works early, creating a backlog of stock in waiting yards. To help solve this problem, Silver Fern Farms put staff on duty on Good Friday and Easter Monday. The chief executive of Silver Fern Farms, Simon Limmer, said other things were being done to lift the levels of processing. Silver Fern's big rival, the Alliance Group, took a different path and chose not to work staff over the Easter break.
