Rather than focusing on male-dominated Silicon Valley, this effort is targeting gender equality in up-and-coming tech hubs. Building Pathways Into Tech Break Through Tech will partner with higher education institutions, starting with the University of Illinois at Chicago to increase the number of female computing graduates. Gates is betting that intervening early in the development of the tech hubs will provide an opportunity to steer the culture in a better direction.
