18 March, the Metrorail Gauteng rail system experienced major delays in the Northern part of the Province due to several challenges. Trains were authorised manually between Akasiaboom and Winternest due to vandalism of signalling components. In addition, a train driver was stoned at Schutte Station, the driver was within a section where movement was being authorised manually due to the Hercules signal control panel failure. The female driver tried to explain to angry commuters that she was waiting for authorisation, when she was hit by a stone in the face. South African President Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, was on the train from Mabopane to Pretoria which was already an hour late and arrived at Pretoria three hours behind the schedule.
