If Mr. Pence truly believes Mr. Trump will be a capable president, then he should do nothing. And, if he has any question about whether Donald Trump can do the job, then he has a responsibility to step aside himself if Mr. Trump won’t. Besides, if the party chose him as Mr. Trump’s replacement, and if he managed to receive Mr. Trump’s blessing, Mr. Pence could yet salvage this mess. All eyes must now turn to his running mate, Mike Pence, to do what must be done. Though it is against his nature and probably his instincts to turn against his running mate, Mr. Pence must put the country first.
