Millions spent on television ads touting initiative to legalize recreational marijuana use

A barrage of television and radio ads has been launched by the campaign for Proposition 64, arguing that the measure to legalize the recreational use of marijuana has restrictions to keep pot out of the hands of minors and will generate $1 billion in new tax revenue. The campaign has reported this week that it has spent $6.8 million of the more than $14 million it has raised so far on broadcast, cable television and radio ads throughout the state. A second ad says Proposition 64 will generate $1 billion in additional tax revenue to provide services, including after-school, job-training and placement programs. A parents group rallied Tuesday against the initiative, saying it would harm young people. Former Facebook President Sean Parker has given $7.3 million to the campaign, which is called Yes on 64, Californians to Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana while Protecting Children.
