However, what touched me the most is that as much as such targets have been set, it is heartwarming to see the great strides companies are making in creating equal opportunities. De Beers has also implemented several initiatives to empower its female employees as well as to encourage young women to take up careers in mining. Meanwhile, Gold Fields is creating opportunities for people with disabilities (PWDs). By listening to the challenges women and PWDs face within their companies, they are creating a culture of understanding. Many have formed committees that bring those on the ground and executive management together on platforms that give employees a voice to discuss ideas around creating equal opportunities that benefit all.
