Minister for Education Richard Bruton has announced a wide-ranging review of the career guidance system in second and third level institutions. In 2012, 600 guidance counsellor posts were withdrawn from the education system. And in November a survey of 3,200 secondary school students showed less than half (44 per cent) were satisfied with counselling and career guidance services at their schools. “As Minister I want to ensure that there are many pathways for people to achieve their ambitions through our education and training system, and relevant, comprehensive career guidance is important to guiding people through these pathways. After the review is complete the group will issue recommendations to the Department of Education on what changes should be made to the career guidance system to engage students in the process and ensure they are receiving good quality information on potential career paths.
