Mixing and matching vaccines shows promise

PETALING JAYA: Mixing and matching Covid-19 vaccines does produce potent immune responses, says a co-developer of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. Prof Dr Teresa Lambe said this was particularly true in the case of mixing and matching the Oxford-AstraZeneca and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines. The Oxford Covid-19 vaccine development principal researcher who is with Oxford University’s Jenner Institute, said from an immunologist’s point of view, data from combining doses of both vaccines have been encouraging. “That’s actually one of the areas that I’m working on in the lab and what we have done is give a third dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine to a small number of people, in the hundreds. On neutralising antibodies decreasing against the VoC, Prof Lambe said this does happen with all vaccines they have tested but even so, there was still very good efficacy against the disease.
