His father's religious denomination was not discussed in court, but it is understood he was not part of the LDS Church. On March 13, he set fire to a LDS Church in the West Coast town, completely destroying it. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Christchurch stake president Jared Ormsby told Stuff church members met with Lowenstein in a restorative justice meeting.
