CAIRO - 15 September 2020: The Cassation Court has rejected the last possible appeal of former speaker of the Shura Council Safwat el-Sherif, upholding a 3-year prison sentence and a LE99,049,794 ($6.3M) fine. The court cleared his son and referred him to the Criminal Court of South Cairo. On September 9, 2018, the Criminal Court of South Cairo handed Sherif the final sentence, which he appealed again, but no to avail. Sherif was the chairman of the State Information Service (SIS) between 1978-1980 before chairing the Egypt's national radio and television union. In 2004, Sherif became the secretary-general of the National Democratic Party (NDP), the ruling party under Mubarak.
