NAB Extension - News Summed Up

NAB Extension

Share:A bill for amending the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) 1999, the law that provided for the setting up of a National Accountability Bureau (NAB), is generating heated debate in the parliament. The most significant change, that has been the source of all the outrage, is amending Section 6 of the NAO, by omitting the word “non-extendable” while talking about the term of the Chairman NAB. This begs the question then if approval of the Opposition Leader is required for the extension, which would make the government’s job much harder. Another legal problem that arises is that the Ordinance currently does not provide any accountability process for removal of the Chairman NAB. The Ordinance has loopholes right now- an extension would further hinder transparency and accountability.
