more-inThe Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal has constituted a committee of experts to examine the illegal dumping of fly ash in the Ennore creek by the North Chennai Thermal Power Station (NCTPS). The Bench also took a serious view of Tangedco’s failure to take measures to safely dispose of the fly ash produced by the NCTPS. “The water bodies in Ennore are found to have high degree of ash sediments posing serious environmental issues. The scientific committee will investigate issues such as quantity of fly ash generated by the units from their inception, location of ash ponds, the steps taken to avoid leakages, unaccounted quantity of fly ash dumped, environmental impact due to the discharge, effect of flora, fauna and biodiversity among other issues. ‘Table report by Sept. 15’The committee has been directed to submit its findings before the Tribunal by September 15.
