NIWA investigate seafloor changes after Whakaari/White Island eruption

On the afternoon of Monday December 9, Whakaari/White Island erupted while people were visiting the live volcano. Scientists will investigate the depths around Whakaari/White Island with sound beams to see whether last year’s eruption has altered the seafloor. The area around the island is known for its underwater canyon system and bubbling vents, Mountjoy told Stuff. Dave Allen/Supplied NIWA marine geologist Dr Joshu Mountjoy said scientists want to see how the submarine environment around Whakaari/White Island has changed since the eruption.
