The young Mexican Americans boarded boats and a seaplane that brought them to the shores of Santa Catalina Island. Shortly after 10:30 a.m., someone looked up and spotted the 26 Brown Berets in military formation on the ridgeline. Members of the Brown Berets rest in a campground on Catalina Island in 1972. Decades ago, the activists staged a so-called invasion of Catalina Island to occupy the land as a symbol of the Chicano movement. In the Catalina Island Museum, among the exhibits on the island’s history, there is no mention of the Brown Berets’ occupation decades ago.
