LINCOLN — The three friends gathered at Gate 16 outside Memorial Stadium wearing Nebraska volleyball alumni T-shirts and big smiles. A five-minute walk and 49 years ago, the first senior class of Nebraska scholarship volleyball players would climb the stairs to Room 313 and play in front of little more than a collection of family members and boyfriends. Practices usually ended with Vicki (Ossenkop) Highstreet, Cheryl (Nolte) Henry and Denise Stange among those rushing out to officiate high school matches. “Not crowds, but people.”The three classmates are the ultimate ‘tweeners in Nebraska volleyball history. “There’s a lot of pride that we were from Nebraska,” Highstreet said.
