Our collective well-being and safety depend on staying the course toward a new, more effective shared safety strategy that works for all Californians. This is especially apparent in the criminal justice system. For nearly half a century now, California has responded to every public safety challenge with the same “solution”: incarceration. Now, however, we have an obligation to commit to a 21st century public safety system that will be far more effective at keeping us safe and protecting our shared well-being. Instead, we must seize this historic opportunity to create a real shared safety system that works for us all.
