Netflix has released the first trailer for a riveting docuseries chronicling the behind-the-scenes battle to succeed media mogul Rupert Murdoch. Dynasty: The Murdochs is a four-part documentary that details the fight to take control of the Fox News kingpin’s empire based on thousands of pages of documents, emails and text messages. Dynasty is billed as presenting “an exhaustive history of Rupert Murdoch’s rise while homing in on the tensions that have built for decades between him, his chosen heir Lachlan, and Rupert’s three other adult children: James Murdoch, Elisabeth Murdoch and Prudence MacLeod.”From the official description: “This limited series exposes the private machinations of a family torn apart by power, politics, and a desperate desire for their father’s love. While Rupert Murdoch has spent over 80 years building an empire that shapes governments and democracies, the series poses the ultimate question: Is a dynasty a family or a business?”In the trailer (below), the comparisons to HBO’s Succession — which itself was inspired by the Murdoch family — are laid bare, with one observer noting, “it reads like an episode of Succession” and that Murdoch “wasn’t raising children, he was raising possible successors,” as well as, “it’s like a family squabble on steroids that has a huge effect on our politics and our lives.”The documentary is directed by Liz Garbus and includes interviews with reporters who covered the family’s revealing legal battle, including New York Times reporters Jim Rutenberg and Jonathan Mahler, as well as former Fox News employees. Dynasty: The Murdochs will premiere on Netflix on March 13.
