This weekend EU leaders launch the Conference on the Future of Europe, which will apparently determine the direction of travel for decades to come. Almost exactly 20 years ago they began a venture with almost exactly the same name — the Convention on the Future of Europe. SponsoredFirst, the former French president Valéry Giscard d’Estaing was appointed its president. Critics immediately hailed him as “not so much yesterday’s man, but the day before yesterday’s man”. Eventually d’Estaing’s convention came up with a new constitution for Europe.
