A recent report from the nonprofit Institute for Justice has both good news and bad news for New Hampshire when it comes to the economic cost of professional licensure. About 16 percent of Granite State workers are in licensed professions, the report estimates. “At the national level, licensing may cost the economy between $183.9 [billion] and $197.3 billion each year in misallocated resources,” the institute’s report states. Consumers and the wider economy pay the price.”The institute estimates that licensing has cost more than 8,000 jobs in New Hampshire. Among other states, Nevada had the highest percentage of workers licensed at 26.6 percent.
