A violent four-week stretch has seen murders in New York City surge by 100 percent in comparison to the same time period last year, statistics released by the NYPD have revealed. The Big Apple suffered 38 killing over the last 28 days, double the 19 seen during the same time frame last year. So far in 2020, there have been 159 murders in New York in total, an increase of 32 in the same time period in 2019. The uptick in murders has been attributed to gang and drug activity, with drug dealers reportedly violently clashing over territories. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced plans last week to move some funding from the NYPD to youth and social services.
