Nick Saban’s retirement leads to shockwaves, new signings in San Diego County

When Nick Saban retired as football coach after a 17-year run at Alabama, he probably had no idea his decision would affect San Diego County. After Saban’s retirement, Alabama named Washington coach Kalen DeBoer as his replacement. “It’s kind of funny, but I was jogging Tuesday and ran past Army-Navy,” said Carlsbad football coach Thadd MacNeal. He’s one of two San Diego players to choose a service academy, joining La Jolla Country Day quarterback Jaden Mangini, who is headed to the Naval Academy. Black Hills State in Spearfish, South Dakota, also got three San Diego players — Curtis Kemp (Carlsbad), Jamil Kassab (Ramona) and Cody Bigley (Grossmont).
