Nicola Sturgeon ‘would resort to court battle to secure referendum’

Nicola Sturgeon said that the SNP would double its campaign spending to £2.5 million to push the case for independenceNicola Sturgeon has raised the prospect of a court battle with Boris Johnson if he continues to deny her a second Scottish independence referendum. In a speech delivered the day after a poll showed support for independence edging above staying in the Union, the first minister urged her supporters to be patient as she conceded for the first time that another vote may not take place before the end of the year. Ms Sturgeon, 49, was emphatic that she would not sanction any illegal or wildcat referendum but would “keep under constant review” the possibility of pushing legislation for another contest through Holyrood. It would then be up to Whitehall to challenge that decision in the courts. Powers over the constitution are reserved to Westminster.
