Quite possibly the youngest BJP leader to take on the job, Mr. Nabin has his share of challenges at the helm, many of them related to the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Assam, besides internal issues related to the party organisation. The BJP is the main Opposition party in West Bengal, but the road to victory in that State is lined with challenges. For Mr. Nabin, therefore, channelling the BJP’s formidable electoral machine in these States under less salubrious circumstances will be a trial by fire, and he will have to learn on the job quickly. In fact, after he was appointed the BJP’s national working president in December, he undertook a series of tours of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Assam to familiarise himself with the terrain. While the Assembly elections and their likely mixed outcomes will be the immediate outward challenge for Mr. Nabin, he has two internal challenges that may well define his presidency.
