Washington (CNN) There are no conversations inside the White House about altering the date of the general election due to the coronavirus pandemic because that's Congress' decision, a senior Trump administration official told CNN on Wednesday. The comments come one day after White House senior adviser Jared Kushner suggested it's "too far in the future to tell" whether the election will take place on November 3 as scheduled. But the clarification did not explicitly shut down the prospect that the Trump administration could support changing the election date. Neither the President nor his staff can postpone the election , even in an emergency, according to a 2004 report from the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service. That power rests with Congress, which can pass a statute changing the date of the election, but cannot cancel it altogether.
