Northland helicopter crash could have been avoided - CoronerCAA The wreckage of the Squirrel helicopter ZK-IMB is recovered about 1km off the coast of the Karikari peninsula. Soon after the helicopter was reported missing and a loud crash was heard from those trapped on the beach. The deaths of two men whose helicopter crashed while attempting to help people trapped by a fire were "unnecessary", a coroner has found. The next morning a police search and rescue team found the pair, still in their safety harnesses in the helicopter seven metres underwater. De Ridder had been contracted to fight the fire with a monsoon bucket using his helicopter.
