Our mother saved ration vouchers for sweets and chocolates for Christmas and birthdays, so as children, my siblings and I looked forward to Christmas very much. Some weeks before Christmas, we all helped to stir the mixture of the Christmas pudding and while stirring the rich mixture we were supposed to make a wish. We would set up and decorate the Christmas tree as soon as our school terms finished about a week or ten days before Christmas Day, and on Christmas Day itself, after going to church, the family would open Christmas presents that had been piled up around the Christmas tree. Indeed, it was only in 1870 that Christmas Day was declared a national holiday in the US. On Christmas Day morning, my sisters and I would come and find our stockings filled with gifts and a telltale trail that Santa and reindeer had been around.
