A New York City police officer survived a shooting in the Bronx on Saturday night as he sat in a marked patrol vehicle in what the police commissioner said was “an assassination attempt.”The officer, who was not identified and who was in the driver’s seat, was hit in the chin and neck, near the carotid artery, the commissioner, Dermot F. Shea, said at a news conference. “It’s a miracle we are not here under worse circumstances,” he said. A suspect was detained overnight and was being held at the 25th Precinct, the police said. The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. at Barretto and East 163rd Streets. Two uniformed officers, who were assigned to the 41st Precinct, were in a marked police van when a man approached and asked for directions, Commissioner Shea said.
