One of Portland’s best Ethiopian restaurants has closed due to coronavirus restrictions

Abyssinian Kitchen, Southeast Portland’s critically acclaimed Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurant, has closed, according to a post on the restaurant’s Facebook page. The restaurant, a mainstay in The Oregonian/OregonLive’s annual guide to Portland’s best restaurants, took over the Southeast 21st Avenue house-turned-restaurant formerly home to Sok Sab Bai in 2015, serving comforting stews and spiced meats on big plates lined with tangy injera flatbread. The restaurant had a relaxed pace, an ideal place for sipping glasses of honeyed wine and lemonade on breezy patio tables or back nooks wrapped in light brown walls. Until then, we’ll miss chef Elsa Wolday’s beef dishes most of all -- though the Abyssinian Kitchen was vegan-friendly, the rosemary-scented strips of grilled steak, peppers and onion known as zilzil tibs and the bone-in short rib over stewed collard greens called siga and gomen were among my personal favorite dishes. -- Michael Russell, mrussell@oregonian.com, @tdmrussellSubscribe to The Oregonian/OregonLive newsletters and podcasts for the latest news and top stories.
