Ontario health minister Christine Elliott recently announced the most radical changes in 50 years to our health system. Elements of the transition, such as merging Cancer Care Ontario into a new super agency called Ontario Health, seem ill-advised. The health teams are the most recent of a series of incremental health improvements that have been designed to better integrate care in Ontario. The next phase of this “integration evolution” will be Ontario health teams leading coordination within local health regions. Unlike the bureaucratic super agency, there is considerable hope that Ontario health teams may actually improve the patient experience.
