Historically Black neighborhoods were always designated high risk. Between 2007 and 2013, following the collapse of the housing market, the median net worth of Black families fell on average 44.3% , versus 26% for White families. Black families were twice as likely to be foreclosed upon during this time. Today, Black homeowners are nearly five times more likely to own homes in previously redlined neighborhoods than White families, according to a study by real estate brokerage Redfin.
