Mateen’s ex-wife told the Washington Post that Mateen “was not a stable person” and used to beat her. She said she moved to Florida to marry him about eight years ago, but the marriage only lasted a few months. She said Mateen was born in New York, but had moved to Florida with his family. "He would just come home and start beating me up because the laundry wasn’t finished or something like that,” said the ex-wife, who spoke to the Post on the condition she not be named. The pair reportedly formally divorced in 2011.
